Phoenix Phaxx: A Learning and Giving Adventure

Phoenix Phaxx

I saw a supplemental curriculum for Social Studies that Sonlight curriculum and the  Far East Broadcasting Company are offering. It is a fun online program that features five countries.  History, daily life, and faith are discussed in the 8 minute long videos. You can also read about each country and discuss this with your child(ren). The program is called Phoenix Phaxx’ Pocket Guide to The Great Commission. Your children can collect money to help purchase a wind-up radio for children in these highlighted countries to share the Good News of the Gospel. You are encouraged to give a donation of $30.00, but it isn’t mandatory. Click on the link to see what it’s all about. click here

Technology in your Homeschool? Educational apps reviews

Technology is a wonderful tool to use in your classroom, but it can be overwhelming too! Today I thought I’d give you some websites that can help you make informed decisions about what games you’d like to let your children use for school and free time. There are so many fun and innovative apps for your children to use that can enhance and reinforce learning.

Common Sense Media The link I have given you is for the educational apps reviews, but the website has reviews for more a variety of media. Common Sense Media is a non-partisan organization that gives information about media so that you can make good choices for your family.

Here is a review site for educational apps for children 0-12 for your iPad and iPhone. Best Kids Apps  ** As a side note** Bookworm is recommended as a game for all ages and I concur. I have it on my iPod and iPad and play it when I can. I really enjoy it. Keeps the ol’ gray matter challenged.  🙂

OHMommy has written reviews of some of her favorite educational apps for preschoolers. I have seen a few of her recommendations on different websites as well and since she has some of her own testers. I am sure her recommendations would be worth looking into.

Do you have a child with Special needs? I found a website that will be helpful to you. I tutor several autistic students and this has given me ideas to use with them. Apps for Children with Special Needs

Have you found any websites or apps that your children enjoy? Please share!

Have you tried to do copywork with your children? This is a terrific passage to introduce to your students.  It would also make a fun refrigerator piece or a letter to send to grandparents if you had your scholar copy and illustrate it. This poem is short and easy to remember for little ones if you’d like to have them memorize it and recite to Dad at the dinner table tonight.

Labor Day

Researching national holidays when we celebrate them seems more pertinent than just learning about them all at once. So what is Labor Day? It was celebrated in 1882 in New York by the Central Labor Union and became known as the “workingman’s holiday”. Unions helped give workers rights and protected them from conditions such as long hours and low pay.

Here is a link if you would like to read more about the history of the holiday and also has a variety of activities from which to choose. I think you will enjoy this resource. kidskonnect

This would be a terrific segue about Community Helpers that is taught in the lower elementary grades. Here are some educational pages that can be downloaded:
