Notifying your School District

photo

Notifying the school district is quickly approaching! Here is an explanation from Home School Legal Defense in regards to notifying the school district. Please read carefully since the law changed in 2014.

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

We have received numerous inquiries related to a recent homeschool law change in Ohio. Although you are not required to send your notice of intent over the summer we know many do, since, while there is no deadline for notification, we generally suggest that the notification be submitted by the start of school in your district.

Ohio homeschool law (Revised Code Section 3321.04) formerly required homeschool families to notify the “city or exempted village school district or the educational service center.” However, the law has been amended to read that the notification should be sent to the “superintendent of the school district in which the child resides.”

This means that homeschool families who previously notified their educational service centers or county superintendent must now notify their local school district’s superintendent instead. Please ensure you are sending your notification and assessments to the correct address for this coming year.

If you need help with filling out the Home Education Notification Form, please see my post called Filling Out the Notification Form.

This is not legal advice. I am not a lawyer, nor do I play the part of a lawyer in any capacity. 🙂 If in doubt or you have a legal question, contact Home School Legal Defense.

History and Horses

For some reason it seems like girls are enamored with horses. The dreams of riding and owning a horse are a subject of conversation in many a play group that has girls. I remember a particular school year when my son was the only boy in an art class of nine and one day he came home and exclaimed, “I don’t think I can take it any longer! I want to quit art class.”

I was surprised and asked, “What is it that you can’t take any more in there?”

“All of this talk about horses. That’s all they [the girls] think about!”

Beautiful Feet has a written an award- winning history curriculum called The History of the Horse for horse lovers grades 3-6+. Classic books such as The Black Stallion and Misty  of Chincoteague  that are read throughout the year. If you are interested in purchasing it, there is free shipping on your order. My boys and I did not do this particular study, but have done others of theirs and I highly recommend their products. They are well written and I was able to easily incorporate other books, movies, and additional lessons if I needed to fit my plans. History of Horse Pack - Beautiful Feet Books

The Skinny Gut Diet

I recently read this book, called The Skinny Gut Diet for Blogging for Books. Can you tell what I am trying to do this summer? 🙂

This book gives you a good overall view of why we gain weight. Primarily, it is the bacteria in our stomachs and Dr. Brenda Watson helps you to change your diet, and thus, get rid of your spare tire. There are recipes and tips to help you with your diet and stay on the right course.

Read Aloud Books about Animals

Summer is such a great time to read and relax on the porch with a glass of your favorite cold beverage. I have had several requests from homeschool moms this summer for books about critters to read aloud to their children. I aim to please (if I can) and have some nonfiction books that I have loved or heard about.

Sam Campbell wrote books about all of the creatures he either observed or adopted while living in the wilderness in northern Wisconsin where he lived with his wife. His books are entertaining as he describes the antics of these creatures.

All Creatures Great and Small is one in a series of books written by James Herriot. Telling the stories of a country vet in Great Britain, Dr. Herriot’s  are funny, sad, and heart-warming. One time we listened to CD’s while we were in the car and the boys were not happy with just one story. They begged for more and more to the point that I thought we would run out of stories before we arrived at our destination. PBS also dramatized his stories if you want to see the countryside where he worked and lived. Some of Dr. Herriot’s stories have been made into children’s books too, such as Moses the Kitten.

The Institute for Excellence in Writing has a program for students in grades 3-5 that would correlate nicely with Dr. Herriot’s books called All Things Fun and Fascinating. It includes outlining, grammar, source texts, and creative writing. Here is a description of the program CLICK HERE

Unlikely Heroes, by author Jennifer Holland, is a compilation of 37 animal stories. Tales of heroic deeds done by all sorts of animals will be sure to be of interest to your animal-loving children. If this title sounds interesting, she also has written a book called Unlikely Friendships.
