  1. Hi Lisa. This will be my fourth year doing a portfolio review. I like being able to show my child’s work through the whole year and the progress they have made from beginning to end instead of a test which is more like a snapshot. A snapshot only shows one image. Likewise a test only captures a certain set of knowledge at a particular point in time. Plus I appreciate the feedback from Lisa which is more nuanced than a test would give.

  2. Although I was initially terrified about the portfolio review process, I now look forward to meeting with you and looking over all that we accomplished (both in the classroom and out)! I appreciate your suggestions and encouragement.

  3. I love sitting down with Lisa for our portfolio review for several reasons. As I gather everything to prepare, I always realize that we’ve done so much more than I thought. I enjoy Lisa’s feedback and excellent suggestions. I also use it as a way to encourage my children to do their best because they often get very lazy mid-year, with us doing our reviews earlier each year, I’m able to use someone else’s eyes as motivation to kick it up a bit. Looking forward to a visit soon!

  4. This year will be my third year doing a portfolio review. I like for a few reasons. One, it forces me to go back through their work and pick examples that really reflect their abilities and their progression throughout the year. It is rewarding to look back through and see the progress they have made. Second, I have never liked testing. I didn’t like it when I was young and I don’t like it now. My kids are still so young testing would not be beneficial to them. I think it is more important to teach them and help them to learn to correct things they have trouble with than to test them. Maybe when their older testing would be helpful to prepare them for testing in college, but I don’t feel it is an accurate assessment of their abilities.

    • Thank you, Melissa! I agree with you that portfolio reviews give you a time to reflect on the year to see the progress your child has made. It also helps you to see where need more help is needed and you can concentrate upon them in the upcoming year.
It will be good to see you again. 🙂

  5. I love portfolio reviews with Lisa because they are a joy! Instead of feeling stressed or burdened by the appointment or dealing with testing, I look forward to my end of year review. It’s nice to be able to discuss successes and get ideas and resources for any problem areas.

  6. Hi Lisa! Just subscribed to your blog. I am looking forward to seeing you this year with 5 of my children. I so appreciate the time you take for each child’s review. I enjoy the assessment process a lot more than a standardized test. All children learn differently and learn at different paces. We all know that a standardized test is not a true indication of how much a children knows. Thank you for continuing to give me great ideas to this veteran homeschooling mom.

  7. Hi Lisa, until this year, my son has been associates with Lighthouse Christian Academy and they administer the Stanfors 10. But since we are no longer with LCA, Caleb will need an assessment. I have just subscribed to your blog. I also have a family member who started homeschooling this year and their daughter will need an assessment; I recommended you! Hope I win the free assessment! Thank You for all you do!

  8. Hi Lisa. I love having portfolios for my daughter. Kaitlyn does not test well due to some medical issues so having a portfolio is less stressful for both of us. I get a better idea of what she needs to do and what I can do to help her. I love getting feedback about what I can try to help her learn better. She loves knowing that she is doing well and knowing that she is ready for the next year.

  9. Last year was my first year to have a portfolio review. It was a wonderful experience. It is always a joy to sit with Lisa and visit. She is kind and generous with the time she shares with you. I left the meeting with many ideas to help make the next year better. Lisa recommended many books and activities that we are using this year. I look forward to doing reviews with her again this year.

  11. Lisa,
The end of the year portfolio review with you is like the gift of water to a thirsty soul! I always leave feeling encouraged, refreshed, and with new ideas from your wealth of knowledge and experience. You consistently and prayerfully consider each student and each family dynamic to find the strengths that need drawn out and celebrated, as well as offer practical and helpful wisdom and suggestions for both the homeschooling parent and students. You do a marvelous job of celebrating and appreciating the various types of homeschooling families that meet with you. I also love knowing that you personally are always on the hunt for growing in ways/tools/methods to encourage and help the families that visit you for their portfolio reviews.
